Kilkenny 2-09 Galway 5-07
Galway secured there place in this year’s Irish Daily Star Division one final when they dethroned champions Kilkenny on a 5-07 to 2-09 in O’Connor Park Tullamore on Sunday.
Galway playing against the wind burst out of the traps and raced into a 1-04 to no score lead after sixteen minutes. They were giving the best possible start when they were awarded a penalty after forty seconds after Ailish O’Reilly was fouled. Niamh McGrath stood up and riffled her shot to the roof of the Kilkenny net. Niamh McGrath then popped over a free in the seventh minute before Molly Dunne pointed in the twelfth minute. Niamh McGrath then popped over a free after Ailish O’Reilly was fouled. Niamh McGrath then tapped over a further free in the sixteenth minute to make it 1-04 to no score. Kilkenny opened there account with a Denise Gaule free in the eightieth minute. Katie Power then pointed to make it 1-04 to 0-02 points after twenty minutes. Denise Gaule then tapped over a further free a minute later and Kilkenny were right back in the contest. Galway then went on another devastating scoring run. Niamh McGrath tapped over a free in the twenty third minute before Ailish O’Reilly got in for Galway’s second goal. She gained possession thirty five meters out, tore through the Kilkenny cover to blast home from close range. Orlaith McGrath then tapped over a point after latching onto a poor Kilkenny puck out. Denise Gaule responded for Kilkenny with a free in the thirty second minute after Katie Power was fouled from thirty five meters to make it 2-06 to 0-04 at the break.
Kilkenny began the second half well and opened there account with a Denise Gaule free in the thirty first minute. Denise Gaule then got in for Kilkenny’s first goal when she latched onto a Miriam Walsh pass to blast home from fourteen meters. Kilkenny were then awarded a penalty after Anna Farrell was fouled but Denise Gaule’s effort was saved. Miriam Walsh tapped over a point in the forty fourth minute to make it 2-06 to 1-06 and it was game on. Galway had different things on their mind and hit Kilkenny for two goals in as many minutes. Ann Marie Starr got in for Galway’s third goal when she latched onto a breaking ball to tap home from fourteen meters. Niamh McGrath then got her second goal of the game when her effort from forty five meter deceived the Kilkenny defence to go straight to the net, it may of receiving a deflection along the way to push Galway 4-06 to 1-06 clear after forty six minutes. Denise Gaule then tapped over two free in the forty ninth and fifty fourth minute before Fiona Keeley tapped over a point for Galway to make it 4-07 to 1-08 clear. Kilkenny were awarded a second penalty in the fifty sixth minute after Katie Power was fouled, Ann Dalton’s effort was saved and deflected out for forty five which Denise Gaule tapped over. Denise Gaule then got in for Kilkenny’s and hers second goal in the fifty eight minute when she latched onto a Miriam Walsh pass to excellently despatch the sliotar to the net from twenty one meters. Galway hit Kilkenny for their fifth goal in the sixty second minute after Ailish O’Reilly latched onto a breaking ball in the Kilkenny square to tap home to see them home on a 5-07 to 2-09 score line. Galway will now face Cork in the final in two week. For Kilkenny they must regroup for the Leinster champions against Kildare in a month’s time.
In other camogie news the Kilkenny under 16 A team won the Leinster championship final when they brilliantly defeated Dublin in Fenagh on a 3-09 to 1-07 score line. This was a terrific result as Dublin defeated the cats in the group phase of the competition.
