Kilkenny 3-16 Waterford: 3-07
Sarah Ann Quinlan finished with seven points as the Kilkenny senior team made it two wins from two in the National Camogie League Division one when they had nine points 3-16 to 3-07 to spare over last year’s All Ireland Intermediate Champions Waterford in Piltown on Sunday.
Kilkenny made the dream start to the game when they got in for the opening goal after forty seconds when a long range clearance from eighty meters from Ann Dalton deceived the Waterford defence and found its way to the back of the Waterford net. Waterford bounced back from this early concession with a Caithriona McGlone free from twenty one meters in the second minute to cut the deficit to two points 1-00 to a 0-01 point. Kilkenny were awarded a penalty in the fourth minute when Sarah Ann Quinlan was dragged down on her passage on goal. Denise Gaule stood up to the resulting penalty but her effort was brilliantly saved by the Waterford
net minder Tracey Kiely and they cleared there lines. Aoife Neary put Kilkenny a goal ahead in the fifth minute when she pointed from thirty five meters. The teams then traded points with Beth Carton tapping over a free for Waterford from thirty meters before Sarah Ann Quinlan put a goal in it again 1-02 to 0-02 when she pointed from twenty one meters in the eleventh minute. Patricia Jackman responded for Waterford with a free from fifty meters in the thirteenth minute to cut the gap to two points. Kilkenny responded with five points on the spin. Denise Gaule started the run with a massive free from fifty five meters in the sixteenth minute. Michelle Quilty then tapped over a well taken point from forty five meters after latching onto a brilliant cross field pass from Denise Gaule. Denise Gaule then tapped over a point from forty five meters in the seventeenth minute to make it 1-05 to 0-03.
Sarah Ann Quinlan continued the Kilkenny run with a free from twenty one meters after Michelle Quilty was fouled in the eighteenth minute. Denise Gaule then tapped over a point from thirty meters in the twenty second minute to make it 1-07 to 0-03: Ann Dalton then tapped over an excellent point after she gained possession on the half way line, she cut through the Waterford cover to tap over on the run from twenty one meters. Just as it looked as the game was getting away from Waterford they bounced back brilliantly and got in for a goal in the twenty seventh minute when Beth Carton blasted home from the edge of the small square after latching onto a Jenny Simpsons pass. Sarah Ann Quinlan responded for Kilkenny with a free from forty meters in the first minute of injury time at the end of the first half to ensure Kilkenny went in at the break six points clear 1-09 to 1-03.
Kilkenny began the new half brilliantly by getting 1-02 on the spin. Sarah Ann Quinlan started the run with a massive free from fifty five meters thirty seconds after the resumption. She followed this up with a further free from twenty one meters in the thirty third minute. Aine Gannon got in for Kilkenny’s second goal when she latched onto a breaking ball at the edge of the small square to tap the sliotar home to make it 2-11 to 1-03. Beth Carton stopped the rot for Waterford when she tapped over a free from twenty one meters in the fortieth minute.
Kilkenny went on a further scoring burst getting 1-04 on the trot. Denise Gaule started the run with a point from thirty meters in the forty first minute. Kate McDonald then got in for Kilkenny’s third goal after latching onto a Ann Dalton pass to tap home from the edge of the small square. Denise Gaule then tapped over a point from twenty one meters in the forty fourth minute. Sarah Ann Quinlan then pointed from thirty meters in the forty seventh before Aoife Neary pointed from thirty five meters in the fiftieth minute to make it 3-15 to 1-04. Great credit to Waterford they never gave up and got 2-02 on the trot. Iona Heffernan started the run when she latched onto a long range dropping free into the Kilkenny square to flick the sliotar to the Kilkenny net. Beth Carton continued Waterford’s run with a massive free from fifty meters in the fifty seventh minute. Aoife Shanahan then got in for her sides third goal when she latched onto a breaking ball on the edge of the small square to tap home after a scramble in the Kilkenny defence. Beth Carton cut the deficit to nine points 3-15 to 3-06 when she tapped over a point from thirty five meters in the fifty ninth minute. Sarah Ann Quinlan responded for Kilkenny with a point from twenty one meters thirty seconds later before Waterford added a further points just on the verge of the full time whistle from thirty meters, but it was Kilkenny who claimed their second win of the campaign with an impressive display on a 3-16 to 3-07 score line. Next up for Kilkenny is a mouth watering tie against All Ireland Champions Cork at home on March 13th.

The Kilkenny Intermediate teams wait for their opening league win goes on as Carlow emerged victorious in Piltown on Sunday last on a 2-04 to 0-06 points score line.
In a low scoring first half it was the Barrowsiders who started the brighter and opened the scoring from a Eleanor Treacy forty five after a goal bound effort was deflected out for a forty five. Angela Kenneally responded for Kilkenny with a free from thirty five meters in the ninth minute. Carlow were getting more and more into the contest and their efforts were rewarded in the thirteenth minute when Ciara Quirke latched onto a breaking ball from a Kirsty Maher save on the edge of the small square to put her side a goal ahead 1-01 to 0-01. They were a baron patch in the game with both sides defences on top. Carlow also deployed a sweeper very effectively in the opening period. Margaurite Hoynes broke the deadlock with the last score of the half for Kilkenny from a point from twenty one meters in the twenty second minute to see Kilkenny trail at the break 1-01 to 0-02 points.
Kilkenny began the new half well and opened the scoring from a massive Aine Fahey free from fifty meters in the thirty fifth minute to cut the deficit to a solitary point 1-01 to 0-03 points.
Carlow’s response was almost instant as they got in for their second goal of the contest in the thirty sixth minute when Michelle Nolan latched onto a breaking ball on the edge of the small square from a dropping Eleanor Treacy free after a mix-up in the Kilkenny defence to tap home from close range to put her side 2-01 to 0-03 ahead. Eleanor Treacy then tapped over two frees on the spin.

Michelle Nolan continued Carlow’s good run with a further point from twenty one meters in the forty fifth minute. Aine Fahey stopped the rot for Kilkenny with a massive free from fifty meters in the fifty third minute to make it 2-04 to 0-04. Margaurite Hoynes continue Kilkenny’s run with a well taken point from forty five meters in the fifty fifth before Aine Fahey tapped over a further free from thirty meters in the fifty seventh minute to cut the gap to four points 2-04 to 0-06. Try as they might Kilkenny couldn’t get the crucial scores and Carlow’s defence held firm as the Barrowsiders recorded their first victory of the campaign on a 2-04 to 0-06 point score line. For Kilkenny this loss will be a disappointment but it is very still very early in the season. They must now regroup and get a few more weeks training under their belt ahead of their next match at home to a strong Kildare outfit who had an easy win over Laois on Sunday last 3-06 to 0-03 in two weeks time March 13th.

The Kilkenny minor team got there All Ireland title defense back on track when they recorded a 8 point victory over Clare 3-07 to 0-08 points in Newmarket on Fergus on Saturday. It was Clare that began the game the brighter and opened the scoring through a Regan Conway free from twenty one meters in the fifth minute. Kilkenny responded brilliantly and got in for the games opening goal in the ninth minute when Helen Hoynes latched onto a breaking ball from a throw in, forty five meters out, cut through the Clare defense to blast the sliotar to the back of the Clare net. Clare responded through a Regan Conway point from twenty one meters in the fifteenth minute to cut the gap to a point 1-00 to 0-02 points. Kilkenny then went on a scoring blitz getting 2-02 on the trot. Sophie O’Dwyer started the run with a free from twenty one meters after Ciara Phelan was fouled in the seventeenth minute.
Ciara Phelan then got in for Kilkenny’s second goal when she latched onto a breaking ball to hand pass the sliotar to the net from the edge of the small square. Aisling Morrissey then tapped over a point from twenty one meters after latching onto an excellent placed Sophie O’Dwyer cross field pass. Ciara Phelan continued Kilkenny’s excellent run by getting Kilkenny’s third and her second goal when she gained possession twenty one meters from goal cut through and placed the sliotar in the corner of the Clare net. This made it 3-02 to 0-02 after twenty three minutes. Clare bounced back with a brace of points. Laura Foley started the run with a massive point from fifty meters in the twenty sixth minute. Sinead Power then tapped over a point from forty five meters in the twenty eight minute. Kilkenny responded with a Ciara Phelan point from twenty one meters on the stroke of half time to see Kilkenny lead at the break 3-03 to 0-04 points.
Clare began the new half brightly with a brace of points. Sinead Power started the run with a point from thirty five meters in the thirty second minute. Amy Keating then tapped over a free from twenty one meters to cut the gap to six points 3-03 to 0-06. Kilkenny responded with three points on the trot. Aisling Morrissey started the brace with a well taken point from play after latching onto a Sophie O’Dwyer pass from twenty one meters. Sophie O’Dwyer then tapped over a well taken point from twenty one meters in the forty second minute. She followed this up with a free from forty five meters in the forty fourth minute to make it 3-06 to 0-06. Clare responded with two points on the trot. Amy Keating tapped over a point from fourteen meters in the fiftieth minute. Sinead Power then tapped over a point from forty meters in the fifty fifth minute.
