Kilkenny 5-24 Derry 2-03
The Kilkenny Senior Camogie team claimed there first win of the All Ireland series when they easily overcame Derry 5-24 to 2-03 in Swatragh in Derry on Saturday.
It was the victors who started the game the brighter and raced into a 0-07 points to no score lead. Ann Dalton started the run with a brace of points, the first in the opening minute from forty five meters before she tapped over a free from the same distance a minute later. Julieann Malone then tapped over a point in the third minute from forty five meters. Meg Farrell then tapped over a point from thirty five meters in the seventh minute to make it 0-04 points to no score. Miriam Walsh continue the forward lines good run with a point from twenty one meters in the eighth minute. Shelly Farrell then tapped over a point from twenty one meters in the ninth minute before Ann Dalton chipped in with her third point of the afternoon in the thirteenth minute to make it 0-07 points to no score. Aoife Shaw stopped the rot for the Mourne side with a goal from a twenty one meter free a minute later. The Derry comeback was short lived as the Cats hit Derry for 1-07 on the spin. Sarah Ann Quinlan started the run with a goal in the seventeenth minute after latching onto a Miriam Walsh pass to tap home from the edge of the small square. Ann Dalton then tapped over a brace of points, the first from thirty five meters in the eighteenth minute and from a massive free from sixty meters in the twentieth minute. Miriam Walsh then tapped over a point from twenty one meters a minute later to make it 1-10 to a 1-00. Meg Farrell then tapped over a point from forty five meters in the twenty third minute before Julieann Malone tapped over a point from twenty one meters in the twenty fifth minute. Anna Farrell closed out the first half scoring with a well taken point from forty five meters in the twenty ninth minute to see Kilkenny lead at the break 1-13 to 1-00.
Kilkenny continued there good run at the start of the new half and got 1-01 on the spin. Ann Dalton opened the scoring with a massive free from the halfway line after thirty seconds of the resumption. Denise Gaule then got in for the Cats second goal a minute later when she latched onto a breaking ball forty five meters out cut through the Derry rearguard and blasted home from the edge of the small square. Aoife Shaw responded for Derry with a pointed free from twenty one meters in the thirty third minute. Any hope of a Derry revival was short lived when Miriam Walsh got in for Kilkenny’s third goal in the thirty sixth minute, when she latched onto a breaking ball on the twenty one, cut through to hand pass home from the edge of the small square. Julieann Malone then tapped over an excellent long range point from fifty meters in the thirty eight minute to make it 3-15 to 1-01. Derry were then awarded a penalty in the thirty ninth minute after Mary Kelly was fouled but Aoife Shaws effort hit the cross bar and from the rebound Kilkenny cleared there lines. Julieann Malone then tapped over a point from twenty one meters in the forty third minute after brilliant link up play with Shelly Farrell. Miriam Walsh then tapped over a point from twenty one meters in the forty third minute to make it 3-17 to 1-01. Credit to Derry they never gave up and there efforts were rewarded when Katie McAnenly got there second goal of the contest from a twenty one meter free in the forty fifth minute. Kilkenny hit back brilliantly and got 1-05 on the spin. Miriam Walsh started the run with a brilliantly taken goal in the fiftieth minute, when she gained possession on the twenty one rounded her marker and blasted home. Katie Power who was just introduced as a sub after her long injury lay off showed she is as sharpe as ever when she tapped over a point from forty five meters in the fifty third minute. Shelly Farrell then tapped over a point a minute later from twenty one meters to make it 4-19 to 2-01.Michelle Quilty who also was just introduced as a sub tapped over a well taken point from twenty one meters. From the resulting puck out Katie Power gained possession to tap over from twenty one meters for her second point. Michelle Quilty then also tapped over her second point of the contest a minute later from twenty one meters to make it 4-22 to 2-01. Katie McAnenly stopped the rot for Derry with a free from forty meters in the fifty eight minute, before Anna Farrell responded for Kilkenny with a point from twenty one meters in the fifty ninth minute. Grainne McNicholl responded with a point for Derry from thirty five meters thirty seconds later. Katie Power rounded off a brilliant comeback when she bagged 1-01 in the final moments of the contest. She started the run with a point from twenty one meters in the sixtieth minute. She then got in for Kilkenny’s fifth goal a minute later when she gained possession on the edge of the small square to hand pass home, to see Kilkenny make the long trip home in good spirits after recording a 5-24 to 2-03 victory to secure there opening points of the campaign. Next up for Kilkenny is Dublin at home next Saturday.
