U14D League Final Report
Dunnamaggin 5-4 Windgap 3-6
Dunnamaggin claimed the U14D league final after a late salvo of goals turned this match around in the closing minutes in sunny Windgap on 7th July. The final scoreline was harsh on the Windgap girls who hurled well for long periods and who looked likely winners with less than ten minutes to go; however, Dunnamaggin emerged strongest in the closing minutes to emerge as winners. The opening half saw favourites Dunnamaggin struggle to capitalise on the wind advantage with Windgap competing well in all sectors. A fine Kate Egan goal in the 20th minute gave them a 1-2 to 1-0 lead and they held this advantage to the break (W 1-3, D 1-1) with scores from Hannah Egan(2) and Jenna King(1) for Windgap being cancelled out by an Aimee Hickey goal and an Aoife McCormack point for Dunnamaggin. Dunnamaggin did start the second half well when Aimee Hickey netted to give them the lead but Windgap scores from Hannah Egan (1-1), Jenna King(0-1), Tara Kennedy (0-1) and an Ava Dunne goal saw them take a 3-6 to 2-3 lead as we entered the closing ten minutes. Remarkably, Windgap failed to score in the closing minutes and Dunnamaggin led by the excellent Aoife McCormack drove forward and found their reward with three late goals and a point from Aoife to claim the title in dramatic fashion. Dunnamaggin will be thrilled to have won a league title in their first year to field an U14 camogie team while Windgap will know that a few little things could have seen this match end in their favour. Overall, a fine end to our U14D league which was very competitively fought between seven teams.
