A sunny morning down in Grennan Thomastown last Sunday was the venue for the ACL Final where the favourites Dicksboro took on their old rivals Thomastown.
The first score went to the Boro women with a Aoife Prendergast free quickly followed by a goal from Rose Kelly.
Thomastown got off the mark with a well taken point from Niamh Galway after some great work from Therese Donnelly to turn over one of the Dicksboro backs, not an easy feat! 3 frees in a row from Eva Hynes kept the score board ticking over for the Thomastown girls, she would add one more free in the half bringing Thomastown to 5 points. The Boro took over after that, their running game and passing game was too hard to stop. Asha McHardy popped over 2 from play, with Aoife Prendergast also putting over 2 great points from play. A goal from Aoife Prendergast gave Dicksboro a good lead going into half time. Thomastown did look threatening at times with good runs made, Sarah Barcoe was well marshalled by the tough Dicksboro backs, they worked well together to snuff out any real goal chances.
Half time score Thomastown 5 pts Dicksboro 2-6
The second half started with both teams fighting for every ball. Thomastown seemed to be trying to up their intensity to try and get to grips with Dicksboro and it was a good contest both teams traded points and we thought we were in for a great second half. Unfortunately that wasn’t to be and the Boro took over firing over points for the sport before Jenny Clifford blasted another one into the Thomastown net. Dicksboro would land a further 6 points without reply to finish winners on a score of 3-15 to 7 points.
Best for Thomastown:
Young Marie Farrell had a great battle with Aoife Prendergast in the corner. The half back line also did well coming out with a lot of ball. Therese Donnelly worked tirelessly throughout. Thomastown relied heavily on Eva Hynes, she did well on her frees and worked hard throughout, unfortunately with only one other point scored from the Thomastown forwards to help her, it won’t be enough going forward.
Best for the Boro:
The backs as a unit were hugely impressive their physical toughness and play as a unit snuffed out most of the threats that Thomastown made. Asha McHardy did well on the half forward line along with Amy Clifford in the second half. Great to see Jenny Clifford back after having her baby and getting in for a goal. The speedy Rose Kelly and Aoife Prendergast contributed well to the scoreboard.
