Gaeltec U14E County Final

Dicksboro 2-3 Carrickshock 0-2

A strong defensive performance was very much the foundation for Dicksboro to retain the U14E championship in Dunnamaggin last Saturday morning. A swirling wind made conditions challenging for both sides and likely contributed to the relatively low scoring of this contest and the ability of the Boro girls to get crucial goals early in each half and to shot out the Carrickshock attack ultimately saw them claim this title. For Carrickshock, the winning margin was not a fair reflection on a match where they more than matched the city girls but an inability to convert territorial dominance in the second half into scores proved to be their downfall.

Dicksboro started on the front foot in this match and had put 1-1 on the scoreboard inside the opening three minutes with a goal from Lucy Wyse and a point from a free from Lucy Dowling. Carrickshock then settled into the contest led by Alison Donnelly, Kate Tennyson and Sinead Butler but scores were hard to come by against a resolute Dicksboro rearguard where all six defenders were difficult to overcome. Dicksboro added further points from Lucy Dowling (free) and Lucy Wyse before Kate Tennyson finally got Carrickshock off the mark approaching the half time whistle. Half time: Dicksboro 1-3 Carrickshock 0-1.

The second half followed a similar pattern and an excellent second goal from the lively Lucy Wyse in the 32nd minute gave Dicksboro a commanding eight point lead. Carrickshock then largely took over in terms of territory in the next twenty minutes but despite their best efforts, Dicksboro’s defenders refused to concede any further scores until Kate Tennyson added a further point close to the full time whistle. Overall, Dicksboro deserved their win which completed a league-championship double for them at U14E this year while Carrickshock can reflect on strong progress making it to both league and championship finals – and they competed well throughout this match in difficult conditions for both sides.
