Kilkenny are still in with a shot of making the league final, but they have to beat Antrim this weekend
The Cats are left facing must-win clash after going under to Waterford in round four of the Senior league in Azzuri Walsh Park on Saturday. the result saw the Deise book their place in the decider – who they’ll face remains to be seen with Kilkenny, Galway, Cork & Tipperary all still in the mix
Kilkenny made a bright start to Saturday’s game in Waterford, taking the lead through Aoife Prendergast’s pointed free in the 2nd minute
Waterford were quick to hit back through their talisman Niamh Rockett, who notched up their first three points (two frees)
Things got better for the hosts, when in the 14th minute, Roisin Kirwan intercepted a Kilkenny puck out. Alannah O’Sullivan’s weighted pass set up Beth Carton to power past two defenders and finish to the back of the net
Back came Kilkenny, Aoife Prendergast converted a 45’ for Kilkenny before Steffi Fitzgerald added another point for the visitors, leaving just leave the goal between the sides (1-3 to 0-3)
Carton replied with a great point for the Deise, to which Emma Shortall & Aoife Prendergast (f) added a point each for Kilkenny with Prendergast’s free coming from midfield
Laoise Forrest & Aoife Prendergast then traded points. Heading towards the half time whistle, Roisin Kirwan tacked on a point for the homeside to leave them three points to the good (1-6 to 0-6)
FAST START
Kilkenny made a fast start to the second half, Prendergast slotting over two points to narrow the score to the bare minimum
Waterford took some time to hit back, when they did, their response was decisive. Awarded a 40th minute penalty, Beth Carton made no mistake when she blasted the sliotar to the back of the net. Aoife Prendergast replied with over two pointed frees before Niamh Rockett tacked on a point from play for the hosts
While Orla Hickey added another point for the Deise. Kilkenny had the momentum over the next five minutes with Aoife Prendergast hitting three frees in succession to whittle gap back to a single point (2-8 to 0-13)
Kilkenny pushed for an equaliser , but Waterford held their lead. Niamh Rockett (f) & Roisin Kirwan added a point each for Waterford, enough to see them home. Aoife Prendergast hit her 12th point but Waterford had done enough to seal the win
Kilkenny will be hoping to bounce back when they entertain Antrim at UPMC Nowlan Park on Saturday. Throw in time is 2pm
