Kilkenny’s U17 camogie girls produced a fine team performance to secure a deserved win over gallant Galway in the U17 round robin match played in Piltown last Saturday 11th April. While conditions were dry and sunny for most of the hour, it was a bitterly cold and windy afternoon which made it difficult for all sides to play to their best but a strong second quarter where they outscored Galway by 1-6 to no score proved to be the crucial period in a match which was very evenly fought in the other time periods. This development competition also saw both sides give game time to all panel members and while this made for a lot of substitutions over the hour, it was well managed by both management teams throughout.
Despite the traffic restrictions in place over the day of this match, Galway arrived in good time and opened the scoring with two points in the 8th and 9th minute from Madison Earley and Emma Forde. The swirling breeze in Piltown contributed to a low scoring start to the match but Kilkenny did settle as the half progressed and with Aisleann Mullally very accurate from placed balls, they had drawn level at 0-2 each by the 13th minute. Two further Galway points from Kate O’Sullivan and Katie Leen with a reply from Eilish Keating for Kilkenny had Galway 0-4 to 0-3 ahead by the 17th minute but remarkably they were held scoreless for the rest of this half as Kilkenny took control of the contest. Defensively they got to grips with the Galway attack with Moya O’Shea and Lucy Lennon prominent while further forward, points flowed from Grace Farrell, Moya Egan, Laoise Kehoe, three Aisleann Mullally frees and a fine finish to the net by Alannah Russell in the 27th minute gave them a commanding 1-9 to 0-4 lead at the interval.
The second half was very evenly fought throughout as Galway fought hard to reduce the deficit but found scores hard to come by with the Kilkenny defending proving to be very resolute. Galway did threaten a comeback with two early points from Jenni McNamara and Siofra Barry in the opening five minutes of the half but three pointed frees from Aisleann Mullally had increased the lead to 1-12 (KK) to (0-6) by the 45th minute. Galway did largely dominate the closing quarter and had a number of goal chances to put the match back in the melting pot but Kilkenny’s defence held firm and only yielded three further points by the time referee Paul Cahill called for full time. They also added two final points through an Aisleann Mullally free and a fine score from play by Gwen Wade. This result leaves Galway, Cork and Kilkenny all level on four points after three round robin matches and a finals weekend will be held between these three teams and Tipperary in two weeks time.
