Clara 4-15 Conahy Shamrocks 5-9
A superb U16D Camogie League Final on Friday evening produced a contest worthy of the occasion, with Clara emerging victorious by 4-15 to 5-9 after a thrilling encounter with Conahy. Played in excellent conditions, the final showcased everything that is good about underage camogie, with both teams displaying tremendous skill, determination and sportsmanship throughout an absorbing hour of action. The crowd was treated to a game that ebbed and flowed from start to finish, with the outcome remaining in doubt right up to the closing stages.
Conahy made the stronger start and looked in excellent form during the opening half. Their sharp attacking play and ability to convert scoring chances helped them build a healthy advantage, and they were full value for their 2-8 to 0-5 lead at the interval. Clara battled hard throughout the half but found themselves facing a significant challenge as the teams headed for the break.
Clara emerged for the second half with renewed energy and produced a remarkable third-quarter display that completely transformed the contest. Playing with great intensity and accuracy, they rattled off 1-6 without reply, wiping out the deficit and drawing level at 2-8 to 1-11. With the sides now level, the final developed into a gripping battle of wills. Conahy responded impressively and refused to allow Clara pull away, while Clara continued to ask questions of the Conahy defence. Scores were exchanged at either end as momentum swung from one side to the other. At various stages both teams managed to edge a few points clear, only for their opponents to respond immediately.
The quality of the camogie on display never dipped despite the intensity of the contest. Excellent scores, committed defending, strong fielding and tireless work rates were evident all over the pitch. As the game entered its closing minutes, it appeared that extra time might be required to separate two exceptionally well-matched teams. However, Clara found the decisive moment when they needed it most, with full-forward Olivia Power striking for a late goal that ultimately proved the difference between the sides.
Conahy battled bravely to the very end and can take enormous pride from their performance. Having led for long periods and contributed so much to a memorable final, they were unfortunate to finish on the losing side. Their display was full of character, skill and resilience, and they played a major role in making the occasion such an entertaining spectacle. For Clara, the victory was reward for their refusal to give up when facing a nine-point deficit at half-time and for the remarkable spirit they showed during their second-half comeback. In the end, this was a final that had everything – excellent scores, dramatic momentum swings, outstanding individual contributions and wholehearted endeavour from both teams. Most importantly, it was a celebration of underage camogie at its very best.
Attention now turns to the championship, where both Clara and Conahy will undoubtedly be contenders. On the evidence of this outstanding final, both teams have the quality and determination to go far, while their excellent sportsmanship throughout was a credit to their players, mentors and clubs.
