The Cats back into a first All Ireland semi-final since 2022
It was Fourth time lucky for Kilkenny in Senior Camogie All Ireland Quarter Finals when they defeated neighbours Waterford after extra time in Croke Park last Saturday
After defeats in their previous three visits to GAA HQ this was a defiant display by Jimmy Meagher’s side as Katie Nolan produced a bit of magic off the bench in addition to a player of the match display from the superb Laura Murphy
Mairead O’Brien opened the scoring with a point from play for the Deise in the fourth minute. Beth Carton then added another point for the Waterford team to push them two points clear. It took Kilkenny 11 minutes to open their account, but they then hit four unanswered points through Aoife Prendergast (3, 2f) and Laura Murphy
Bevin Bowdren & Asha McHardy traded points from play before Beth Carton then hit the next three points to put Waterford ahead.
Aoife Prendergast who had a penalty saved in Kilkenny’s loss to Tipperary at the same stage equalised with a pointed free before Annie Fitzgerald slotted over a point for the Deise, to move them a point ahead
In the 30th minute, Waterford were awarded a penalty and ironically, given what unfolded 12 months ago, it was Carton who failed to register from the spot this time, the De La Salle player firing just wide
Heading into injury time, Eimear O’Neill & Laura Greene swapped points before Lorraine Bray scored a point for Waterford on the stroke of half time to leave the Deise 0-9 to 0-7 ahead
On the resumption of play, Kilkenny came out all guns blazing & fired over the first three points through Aoife Prendergast (f), Sarah Barcoe & Laura Murphy to put Kilkenny ahead but Beth Carton the shot over two points to put Waterford back in front. Kilkenny then played a low ball into Sarah Barcoe, she turned her marker to fire over a point to level matters again
Laura Murphy & Aoife Prendergast shot over a point each for the Stripey women to put them two ahead again before Orla Hickey & Annie Fitzgerald tagged on points for the Deise with a Sarah Barcoe point sandwiched in between for Kilkenny
Then Eimear O’Neill levelled matters again with a point from play. A point from Claire Doheny one minute from time looked to have secured Kilkenny’s spot in the Semi-Finals but with Beth Carton landing an equalising free, an extra 20 minutes resulted
Annie Fitzgerald put Waterford ahead after 15 seconds of the restart before Laura Murphy took a shot on the Waterford goal but shot just inches wide
Katie Nolan made no mistake seconds later, with a brilliant finish in the 62nd minute, after Steffi Fitzgerald had a shot brilliantly saved by Brianna O’Regan. The sliotar looped into the air and Nolan was on hand to rattle the net
Aoife Prendergast slotted over another free before Beth Carton added another free for the Deise and Rachael Walsh tacked over a point to narrow the gap to the minimum
Prendergast had the final say of the first half of Extra Time after Katie Nolan’s effort on goal was deflected wide and Prendergast slotted over the resulting 45 to leave the stripey women 1-17 to 0-18 ahead
Beth Carton fired over a pointed free at the start of the second period of extra time before Prendergast slotted over her 9th point from a free to push Kilkenny two points clear. In the 76th minute, Fitzgerald ran towards the Hill 16 end, drew the last defender to give Nolan a far simpler goal chance and she made no mistake, putting Kilkenny five ahead
Heading towards the full time whistle, Maggie Gostl drilled to the net off the ground. It was Laura Murphy who had the final say however, with a fantastic point from distance as Kilkenny marched into the All-Ireland Semi-Finals, where they will face reigning champions, Galway
