Tullogher 2-14 Carrickshock 2-12
Tullogher and Carrickshock served up an excellent junior camogie league final played last weekend in Hugginstown. After many warm sunny evenings, this was a cooler evening for this match and both sides had their periods of dominance in a hugely entertaining match that swung either side on many occasions – and the skill level, teamwork and general standard of camogie was strong all throughout this encounter which could have gone to extra time had a last minute shot by Carrickshock’s Amy O’Shea been a few inches lower as they chased a levelling goal close to full time. In short, both sides showed plenty to suggest they will be strong contenders for the Junior Championship which starts in a few weeks time.
Carrickshock opened brightly with the opening two points inside the first two minutes but Tullogher responded with an opening free by the impressive Kate Lyng before the same player goaled a minute later to give them a 1-1 to 0-2 lead after five minutes. Carrickshock responded with an Amy O’Shea pointed free but Tullogher then took control for the next fifteen minutes much to the delight of their considerable travelling support and points from Rachel Murphy (2), Lily Ryan and Ella Nolan opened up a 1-5 to 0-4 lead after twenty minutes. Carrickshock had been unfortunate to lose county minor Hannah Tennyson to an injury early in this match but they regrouped and a smart finish to the net from Katie O’Shea in the 21st minute followed by a pointed free from her sister Amy levelled the contest a minute later. Tullogher did finish the half strongly and three further points from the impressive Kate Lyng (two from frees, one from play) saw them lead 1-8 to 1-5 at the break.
The second half saw the match continue to ebb and flow in either direction with the pace of the match unrelenting; Carrickshock had a purple patch of scores from the very lively Amy O’Shea (she added 1-3 in the first ten minutes of this half, added to a point from Niamh Dunphy) saw them retake the lead at 2-9 to 1-10 after forty minutes. Tullogher were struggling to get the ball forward to their threatening inside forwards at this time but resolute defending by Ciara Murphy, Maeve Bookle added to renewed efforts all over the field saw them regain the initiative – and a scoring burst of 1-3 between the 42nd and 46 minutes (1-1 from Kate Lyng and points from Lily Ryan & Ella Nolan) saw them open up a 2-13 to 2-9 lead. However, Carrickshock kept going to the end and shaded the last ten minutes of play which saw them add two points from Amy O’Shea and Niamh Dunphy to a Tullogher reply from Kate Lyng (F) to leave a goal between the sides approaching full time. Amy O’Shea then went on an excellent solo run chasing an equalising goal and her shot was just over the crossbar when most expected the net to shake. This brought a very fine match to a close and both sides had excellent performances in a match played in the best spirit – for Carrickshock, Emily Carroll, Aine Rohan and the lively O’Shea girls (Amy and Katie) were constantly to the fore while Tullogher had many fine performances particularly in attack where all forwards showed well – and the addition of county U16 star Rachel Murphy has certainly added to this unit as she got on a huge amount of ball throughout the hour.
