St Canices Credit Union U16D Championship Final
Clara 2-12 Carrickshock 2-6
Clara finished strongly in the closing quarter to record a deserved win in the U16 championship played in Mullinavat on a blustery October afternoon. This match was very competitive for the first three quarters of the match after which Carrickshock led by a point but Clara pressed for home afterwards and outscored their opponents by 1-5 to 0-1 in the closing quarter to claim this title.
The elements were in Carrickshock’s favour in the opening half and they received a tonic of a start when a long delivery from Sinead Butler ended up in the Clara net inside the opening minute. Clara were further unsettled by an unfortunate injury to Kate Mulrooney a few minutes later but led by the impressive Emily Phelan at centre forward, they knuckled down to the task and levelled the scores at 1-0 to 0-3 by the 14th minute (two points from Emily added to a free by Lydia Phelan). Both sides traded scores from here to the half time whistle – Carrickshock had regained the lead at 1-3 to 0-4 by the 25th minute thanks to scores from Hannah Ryan, Ruth Foran and an Ivan Cahill free but Clara were competing well for possession all over the field and an excellent passing move in the 28th minute led to their opening goal after a goalmouth scramble and a follow up point from Laura Fitzgerald saw them lead by 1-5 to 1-3 at the break.
Carrickshock to their credit raised their own performance levels in the third quarter and a scoring burst of 1-1 inside the opening four minutes of the restart pushed them back in front 2-4 to 1-5. Both sides traded points in the next ten minutes when the score stood at 2-5 (Carrickshock) to 1-7 (Clara) and a tight finish seemed in store with hard fought exchanges all over the field at this time. However, a well taken goal by the impressive Lydia Phelan shortly after she had levelled the match in the 47th minute pushed Clara three points clear and this proved to be the catalyst for them to dominate the remaining time – their defence led by Shona Brennan was boosted by the introduction of Tara Boyd and further afield, the fine play of Emily Phelan, Laura Fitzgerald and Lydia Phelan saw them add further scores to emerge as six point winners at the end of the contest. Overall, a fine contest for long periods and a strong finish by Clara saw them through in the end.
