Kilkenny Rivercourt Hotel Junior Quarter Final
Dicksboro 2-11 Tullogher 2-10
A mere two hours after watching their senior girls reclaim the senior camogie crown in Nowlan Park, Dicksboro’s junior girls turned out in Dunmore to play Tullogher under lights in a junior quarterfinal clash – and they duly made it two wins from two on the day for the Palmerstown club although this latest win was only after an epic battle with a strong Tullogher side where the smallest of margins separated the sides at the end of a well fought match.
Conditions were difficult for both sides during this match particularly during the opening period with rain sweeping down although the surface in Dunmore was excellent for this contest. Tullogher, having played a first round match two weeks earlier, started the livelier of the two sides and with strong performances from Ciara Murphy and Katie Bookle in defence, Sarah O’Sullivan in midfield and Kate Lyng up front, they were very much in the ascendancy for the opening twenty minutes after which they had built up a healthy 1-4 to 0-1 lead thanks to 1-3 from Kate Lyng (3 frees). Dicksboro were under pressure at this stage but slowly grew into the contest and enjoyed a very productive five minute spell from the 20th to the 25th minutes where they scored 1-3 without reply to level the contest – with the goal coming from Caoimhe Carroll. Both sides traded scores in the remaining minutes of the half to leave Tullogher with a narrow 1-6 to 1-5 lead and clearly all to play for in the second half.
The second half was barely two minutes old when Dicksboro hit the front for the first time with a goal from Niamh Ryan and a further point from Megan Trait pushed them three points clear. This half was to prove to be a ding dong affair as Mollie Ryan goaled for Tullogher moments later after a goalmouth scramble and the sides were to be level on a further five occasions throughout the half as the lead ebbed and flowed between both sides. Dicksboro were boosted by the arrival of substitutes Emma Hogan and Eva Tynan and they did manage to limit the scores from the Tullogher attack throughout this period, but on the other side, Tullogher’s defence was equally resolute and the scene was set for a match which looked like it could go to extra time on many occasions. In the end, it was a late Dicksboro point which proved to be enough to get the city girls over the line and they now go on to face Blacks & Whites in the junior semifinal next weekend. For Tullogher, it wasn’t to be on a difficult night for camogie but they contributed hugely to an enjoyable contest where the standard of play from both sides was impressive for long periods.
