Leinster U16A Championship 3rd Round
Kilkenny 3-11 Dublin 1-7
by Tom Egan
Kilkenny U16A camogie girls continued their winning start to the Leinster U16A championship with a deserved ten point victory in Urlingford last Sunday. This game was keenly fought throughout the hour in pleasant conditions and victory sees the Kilkenny side qualify for the Leinster final in two weeks time.
The opening exchanges saw both defences on top and although Kilkenny had the benefits of the elements, it took until the 14th minute for Amy O’Shea to open the scoring with a fine point from play. This led to a period of dominance for the local girls and further points from Emma Hogan and Grace Farrell were added before a fine Amy O’Shea goal in the 19th minute gave Kilkenny a six point lead. Dublin did open their account with a free from Caelfind Hannigan but further scores from Amy O’Shea (2) and Aisleann Mullally saw the home side lead 1-6 to 0-1 at the break.
While Dublin would have hoped for a fast start to the second half, it was Kilkenny who largely put the game to bed with a further 1-1 within three minutes of the restart courtesy of a Holly Ryan point and a smart finish to the net by Grace Farrell. The sides largely traded scores for the next twenty minutes and Dublin to their credit well and a smart finish to the net by substitute Sophie Keary saw the scoreline stand at 2-10 to 1-5 with five minutes remaining. Kilkenny however didn’t yield any further ground and a late goal from Aisleann Mullally followed by an Amy O’Shea pointed free saw them emerge winners by tem points at the end. Best for a Kilkenny side on the day were Mairead Duggan, Emma Hogan, Eva Tynan, Aisleann Mullally and Amy O’Shea with all others contributing to a convincing win.
