Leinster Senior Camogie Championship Semi Final
Wexford 2-19 Kilkenny 2-09
Kate Kelly finished with 1-09 as Wexford ended Kilkenny’s dream of claiming back to back Leinster titles, when her side recorded a 2-19 to 2-09 semi final victory over the Cats in New Ross on Sunday.
It was Kilkenny who began the game the brighter and opened the scoring through a Ann Dalton free from thirty five meters. Kate Kelly equalised the tie for the victors with a forty five in the third minute. Stacey Kehoe edged Wexford into the lead with a point from twenty one meters in the fifth minute. Ann Dalton equalised the tie with a massive free from sixty five meters after Meighan Farrell was fouled in the twelfth minute. Wexford then hit Kilkenny for six points on the trot in a good period of dominance for the victors. Linda Bolger started the run with a well taken point from forty five meters in the thirteenth minute. Shelly Kehoe then tapped over an excellent point from twenty one meters out on the sideline in the sixteenth minute. Kate Kelly then tapped over a free from twenty one meters to make it 0-05 points to 0-02. Katrina Parrock continued the good Wexford run with a point from thirty five meters in the twenty second minute. Linda Bolger then tapped over a point from forty meters in the twenty fourth minute. Kate Kelly then tapped over a free from forty meters in the twenty fifth minute to make it 0-08 points to 0-02. Ann Dalton stopped the rot for Kilkenny with a free from twenty one meters in the twenty seventh minute. Sarah Ann Quinlan continued the Kilkenny fight back with a well taken point in the twenty eight minute, to cut the gap to four points 0-8 points to 0-04. Wexford responded with a devastating scoring burst getting 2-03 on the spin just before the break. Kate Kelly started the
run with a free from thirty meters in the twenty ninth minute. Shelly Kehoe then tapped over a point in the thirtieth minute. Kate Kelly then tapped over a point minute later from thirty meters. One of the crucial scores of the contest came in the thirty first minute when a storming thirty meter run from Kate Kellly resulted in her hand passing the sliotar to the net on her knees in the thirty first minute from twenty meters to make it 1-11 to 0-04 points. Una Sinnott continued the run with the games second goal thirty seconds later when she latched onto a Katrina Parrock pass to tap home from close range to see Wexford go in with a comprehensive 2-11 to 0-04 point lead at the break.
Kilkenny set down there stall early in the new half and opening the scoring through a Miriam Walsh point from twenty one meters in the opening minute. Wexford hit back with two points on the spin. Una Sinnott started the run with a point from twenty one meters in the thirty third minute. Kate Kelly then tapped over a free from twenty meters in the thirty fifth minute to make it 2-13 to 0-05. Ann Dalton responded for Kilkenny with an excellent long range free from sixty meters in the thirty sixth minute. Wexford hit back with a further brace of points from an excellent Kate Kelly free from sixty meters in the thirty ninth minute and a Shelly Kehoe point in the forty first minute. Credit to the Kilkenny side they kept trying to eat into the Wexford lead and got 1-01 on the spin. Ann Dalton started the run with a free in the forty second minute before Julieann Malone got in for Kilkenny’s opening goal in the forty third minute when she latched onto a breaking ball to tap home from close range to make it 2-15 to 1-07. Kate Kelly responded for Wexford with an excellent long range free from fifty five meters from a tricky angle in the fiftieth minute. Ann Dalton who finished with a personal tally of 1-07 after a excellent display, hit back with 1-02 on the spin. She started the run with a forty five in the fifty first minute before she got in for Kilkenny’s second goal a minute later when she latched onto a Kellyann Doyle pass to blast home from twenty one meters an excellent goal. She followed this up with a free from thirty meters to make it 2-16 to 2-09. It was to be Wexford’s day and they closed out the scoring with three points on the spin. Katrina Parrock stated the run with a well taken point from twenty one meters. Shelly Kehoe then tapped over a point from twenty one meters in the fifty ninth minute. Linda Bolger closed out the scoring in the contest in the sixty first minute with an excellent point from forty meters to see Wexford record a highly impressive 2-19 to 2-09 victory to secure a final showdown with Offaly who defeated Dublin in the day’s other semi final. For Kilkenny they must now regroup ahead of there All Ireland series that begins in just over a months time away to Derry.
In other Camogie news, the Kilkenny Intermediate team were also unlucky in there bid to secure a Leinster final berth as they were dethroned by Carlow in Thomastown on Sunday. After going 2-01 to no score behind in the opening minutes Kilkenny hit back brilliantly to lead at the interval 3-03 to 2-02 with goals coming through Jenny Clifford (2-00) and Aine Fahey (1-00). In the second half Carlow staged a gallant comeback and out scored there hosts 0-09 points to 0-03 in the second period, Kilkenny were guilty of hitting some poor wides in the second half. It was to be Carlow’s day as they recorded a 2-11 to 3-06 victory to secure a final berth in two weeks time against Meath who easily over came Wexford in the days other semi final.
