Dicksboro kicked off the championship with a well earned win over St Brigids leaving them with a final score of 4-20 2-05. The combination of the hot humid weather and dog fights for every ball brought an intensity to the match from the off.
Dicksboro started on top with Amy Clifford scoring the first point from play. This was quickly followed with a pass into the corner from Aoife Prendergast to Orla Hanrick which was smoothly put over the bar. It was not long until the first goal was scored with a direct pass from Ciara Phelan to Rose Kelly, who buried the ball into the corner of the goal.
St Brigid’s began their attack but were shut down with a save from Cara Duggan and a clearance from Caoimhe Dowling. Molly Conroy put over St Brigids’ first point bringing them back into the game. This was followed with 2 points more points from St Brigids forwards and was responded to by a point from Dicksboro’s Amy Clifford.
Dicksboro’s Tara Clifford and Angela Carroll battled it out to keep St Brigid’s scores to a minimum, striking balls up to the forwards which led to 3 points from Aoife Prendergast and 1 point from Rose Kelly. Dicksboro headed into the second half with a comfortable lead of 2-09 to 1-04
Dicksboro started on top yet again with a long ball sent in from Dicksboro’s full back Tara Clifford which was swiftly put over by Rose Kelly. As the intensity rose the rooks became tougher, a blow of the whistle was followed by a yellow card give to Dicksboro’s Niamh Phelan.
Dicksboro’s lead was extended with a ball lobbed into the goal by Aoife Prendergast. Dicksboro freshened their team with the substitution of Aobha O’Gorman and Lucinda Gahan for Orla Hanrick and Niamh Phelan. Dicksboro’s forwards were not short of balls with constant passes from Aisling Brown and Caoimhe Dowling adding another 3 points to their lead from Amy Clifford and Rose Kelly. Dicksboro’s Ali Greany and Jane Cass came on for Sarah O’ Gorman and Aisling Brown who both put on a great display of hard work in the backs, keeping St Brigids’ scores to a minimum. St Brigid’s refused to give up, shocking Dicksboro’s backs with an effortless goal batted in by Siobhan Kenny. Dicksboro rapidly responded with a second goal from Rose Kelly followed by points from Jenny Clifford, Aoife Prendergast and Ciara Phelan leaving them with a final score of 4-20 to 2–05. Both teams put on a great display of hard work and skill, keeping both teams on there feet at all times.
